Mountains, rivers, glaciers and volcanoes will unfold as we take you exploring in three easy stages. After leaving Reykjavik, only two hotels are used which makes the days more relaxed and the evenings a time to ponder and talk to your fellow travelers. There will be many opportunities for walking and exploring the beautiful countryside.

June 23, DAY 1: Arrive Reykjavik in morning after overnight flight (for most people departing from Boston via Icelandair) Convenient downtown hotel. Free day. Optional City Tour.
DAY 2: Free Morning. Afternoon: Explore the coastline of SW Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula and have a soak in the famous Blue Lagoon's geothermal, silica-rich waters. Return to Reykjavik hotel.
DAY 3: Today we will be astounded by some of the world's most incredible scenery: Thingvellir's Rift Valley (due to Plate Tectonic spreading), Gullfoss Waterfall (one of the world's most scenic), and the Strokker Geyser. Strokker is right next to the world's original geyser (Geysir), which is now "out of order." The next 4 overnights will be at a comfortable hotel in Hella.
DAY 4**: Explore Laki volcanic area. Today's tour will explore the picturesque crater formations of the Laki fissure system. The eruption in 1783 along the Laki crater row was the largest in historical times. In all, 565 square kilometres of lava flowed in that eruption, creating the most extensive lava field in the world resulting from a single eruption. Hikes to craters and lakes for the afternoon.
DAY 5**: It's up to the Glacier Myrdalsjokull today where volcano Katla lies dormant and overdue - last eruption 1918. It's expected to have an eruption every 50th year or so. To get to the crater we go on snow scooters (2 pr. Scooter) over the glacier (optional activity). In the afternoon we go the glacial valley Thorsmork, have a short hike before returning to our hotel.
DAY 6**: Today we will investigate the incredibly beautiful Icelandic Horses with their unique gait. We'll explore a historic farm, and plan other activities before leaving this beautiful region. Return to our hotel.
DAY 7: Today we head along the coast to Skaftafell National Park with its incredible glacial landscape. We will board amphibious boats to cruise amongst the icebergs that have calved off into glacial lake Jokulsarlon. Our hotel for the next two nights will be in the Skaftafell area.
DAYS 8 & 9: Explore the amazing glacial landscape of Skaftafell National Park.
DAY 10: Free morning, then return to Reykjavik. Reykjavik hotel.
DAY 11: Flight Home. July 3. Of course, you may stay longer on your own.....
** Note: itineraries for some days will be geared to weather conditions and may be reversed.
